He was born January 25, 1924, in Frogtown, GA son of Green Seldon and Martha Jane Wallace Haygood. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Wm. Taft, Pledger, Joe, Hansel and G. S., and sisters, Louemma, Susie, Bertha, Dortha and Eula. He was reared in and around Ball Ground, Cumming and Canton, Ga.
Mr. Haygood had some formal education, but was educated in the School of Hard Knocks, as were many persons born into the Appalachian foothills of northwest Georgia, during the trying times and poverty of the 1920's and '30's. He left the formal education system in the 11th grade in order to assist his widowed mother in the care and provision of his 12 siblings, working as necessary in the logging business, chicken farming and day laborer.
Mr. Haygood was excluded from military duty during World War II due to a pre-existing injury. Instead, he served his country by joining the Civilian Conservation Corps, participating in the building and improving of public parks and facilities in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. He also taught a class of reading/writing to some 200 men while serving.
He moved to Rome in the early 1950's and went to work for Millican Plastering Company, during which time it is estimated he did interior sheetrock and plastering for over 4000 homes and businesses, as well as working on a large majority of the then-developing Garden Lakes Subdivision. Later in life, he did private contracting and worked on the homes of some of the more affluent persons in Rome and the surrounding communities, often being sought after by name as a result of his skills and work ethics, his impeccable reputation having preceded him. Mr. Haygood retired from the drywall profession in 1990. Mr. Haygood was preceded in death, on April 21, 2008, by his beloved wife of 18 years, Jeanette Conaway Bobo Haygood, whom he married on November 17, 1990.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Lila E. New, with whom he spent his last days, she as his caregiver. He is also survived by daughter, Martha Shipman (Don) of Ringgold, GA; two sons: Calvin C. Haygood, II (Gisela) of Sandrock, AL and Carl N. Haygood (Denise) of Taylorsville, GA. He leaves also a large number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he doted upon and was in turn, greatly loved.
Graveside services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Floyd Memorial. Officiating will be Rev. Don Shipman, great grandsons, other family and friends will officiate.
As Mr. Haygood wished, in lieu of flowers, donations are requested for Hutcheson Hospice, 100 Mitchell Rd, Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga 30742.
Henderson & Sons Funeral Home has charge of the funeral arrangements.
