A memorial service for Lawrence A. "Larry" Barton of McMinnville will be held at noon Friday in St. James Catholic Church, McMinnville, with Father Charles Borho officiating.

Mr. Barton died Sept. 18, 2004, in Town Center Village, Portland. He was 87.

He was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Madison, Wis., son of Charles and Leona W. Hammer Butterbrodt. He legally changed his ancestral Teutonic surname shortly before entering military service.

His early years were spent on the family farm near Beaver Dam, Wis., and he attended a one-room country school. He graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1932. He was hired in 1935 as a sales trainee by the Monarch Range Co. of Beaver Dam. He later was assigned in Iowa, then in Montana, where he met Geraldine Burggraf of Salmon, Idaho. On June 29, 1941, they married in Salmon. She preceded him in death in 1984.

World War II halted his sales work and he moved to Portland and began work for the Oregon Shipbuilding Corp. He joined the Navy in 1944 and served aboard the battleship New Jersey in the Pacific Theater.

After the war, Mr. Barton rejoined Monarch and in 1950 became a division manager with headquarters in Portland. He left Monarch in 1965 and accepted a partnership with Rice Furniture in McMinnville. He retired from the business in 1980.

He was a member of McMinnville American Legion Post 21, Walter Bohrer Chapter of the Aviation Breakfast Club, McMinnville Senior Center and Dodge County Lodge 72 AF&AM, Beaver Dam.

He enjoyed watching team sports at the amateur level. He also loved the challenge of crossword puzzles and was an avid pinochle player.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Barton of McMinnville and John Barton of Agoura Hills, Calif.; three daughters, Susan Venner of West Linn, Kathryn Myers of Camas, Wash., and Teresa Hansen of Badenweiler, Germany; three brothers, Lou Butterbrodt of Milwaukee, Wis., Bob Butterbrodt of Beaver Dam and Don Butterbrodt of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Helen Hartman of Beaver Dam; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a son, Bill Barton in 2004, and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the McMinnville Senior Center in care of Macy & Son, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
