PVT, Co E, 23rd MO Inf (US)....Enlisted 3 Aug 1861 in the 23rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry and served until his discharge on 22 September 1864 nearly two months after his enlistment had expired. Participated in Battle of Shiloh in April 1862. His regiment held a position in the Hornets Nest from 9:00 am until nearly 5:00 pm when they were forced to surrender after being surrounded. The regiment was exchanged later in the year. William Daniel also saw action during the Atlanta Campaign at the battles of Peach Tree Creek and Jonesboro July - September of 1864.
