Olga Agnete Smith was the fourth child of eight, born to John and Karen Smith. On June 19, 1912, Olga married George Velie. He was "the son of Alvin Velie, an old-time preacher who would cruise down the Mississippi River to New Orleans in the summer preaching to people along the way. He baptized many of them in the river as well," according to researcher Rebecca Steagall. Olga and George Velie's children were George, Ernest, Lucille, Doris, Wilfred and Robert.
