Howard W. Spurrier, former mayor of Poolesville and long active there as a merchant, banker and church leader, died Tuesday morning in Frederick Memorial Hospital, aged 81 years.

Mr. Spurrier was in business in Poolesville for many years. He formerly was president of the [First National Bank of Poolesville] and superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School at Poolesville. He was president of the Board of Stewards of the church for many years.

He was a son of late John and Martha Spurrier and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel May Spurrier, and a sister, Mrs. Addie Reddick, Poolesville. [He and Ethel had no children.]

Friends may call at the William B. Hilton funeral home in Barnesville until 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Services will be held in Poolesville Methodist church at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.
