He married his first wife, Mary Valentine Davis, with permission on the marriage certificate granted by his father, as he had not come of legal age, on 2 Dec 1895 in Doniphan, Ripley, Missouri.
She died young (born 1876, died 1898), the couple having had two sons during the course of the marriage: John Paul (1896-1961) and Marvin Lee (1898-1970).
Perry left his sons in the care of their maternal aunt, never to return, and went west looking for work. While in Baker City, Oregon, he met his 2nd wife, Sarah Ellen Barker. Together they had 5 children: Margaret "Marg" Rose (1905-1994), Helen Dorothy (1909-1996), Jean M (1912-1990), Mary "June" (1915-1932), and Richard F. B. Mayes (1918-1985).
Perry owned a farm in Western Woodburn in Marion County, Oregon. The family had worked hard as a group to save up to buy the acreage, which was still being cleared of trees.
On 15 Sep 1944, Perry was hit by a train at a crossing and killed. The next day, Sarah Ellen passed away from shock. They are buried side by side in Aurora Community Cemetery, along their daughter June, who predeceased them due to Scarlet Fever as a teen. Two other daughters and their husbands, in-laws, etc are also buried in the cemetery.
In the 1990's the two halves of Perry's family, the descendents of both wives' children, were reunited on nearly no information and a lot of luck. Perry was a father, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather many, many times over by then.
