Son of William Chartis & Margaret Ann (Wood) Nickels. Robert married Lucy A. Gray Sept. 3, 1871 in Lowndes County, Mississippi. They had three known sons: Harvey Reed, Leroy Harrison, and Rufus M. Nickels.

Served in the Civil War with Co. B, 43rd Regiment of the Mississippi Infantry. On 4/07/1863 he was captured via the Confederate Army surrendering to General Grant's Union forces in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He remained a POW until 12/15/1863. He later served with Co. H, 14th consolidated Mississippi Regiment. They were known as the Lowndes Riflemen. Robert died of heart failure.
