Carl was born Jan. 28, 1940, in Lafayette, Ind., the son of Willard "Arnie" and Cora (Ruth) Myers and moved to Edwardsburg from Niles in 1956.
He graduated from Edwardsburg High School and was active in sports in the area for many years. Carl had worked for Miles, now Bayer, from 1961 to 1998, when he retired from research science and quality control. After retirement, he helped Jim Ryder with Dock-Rite work. He was active in hunting, fishing and outdoor activities. Carl was a member of the Edwardsburg men's slow-pitch softball league, which won two state titles. He enjoyed bowling and golfing and watching NASCAR. He liked to garden at his home, especially growing dahlias, but of most importance to him was any activity that included his grandchildren.
Carl was married Sept. 9, 1961, at Edwardsburg Methodist Church, to Sandra Flanders, who survives with their children, Carol (Philip) Peters, Janet (Bradley) Strycker and Roger (Rhonda) Myers, all of Edwardsburg. He has four loving and adoring grandchildren, Julia Myers, Delaney Peters, Alison Strycker and Zachery Strycker. Other family surviving are sister Marian "Janie" Gilbert of Niles and two brothers, James (Nancy) Myers of Niles and Robert (Diane) Myers of Granger, Ind.
Friends and family may gather from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hope United Methodist Church, 69941 Elkhart Road, to remember Carl. There will be a service of remembrance at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011, at the church, where friends may gather for one hour before the service. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeff Reese, pastor. Burial will follow in Edwardsburg Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be directed to Hope United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 624, Edwardsburg, MI 49112-0624; Hospice At Home, 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, MI 49085; or to Edwardsburg Sports Complex, P.O. Box 193, Edwardsburg, MI 49112-0193. The sports complex is newly started.
