Vern grew up in St. Edward and Genoa Nebraska. He attended Genoa High School, obtaining his GED, and joining the Air Force before graduation. Vern served in the USAF from 1962-19682.
Vern married Mary Martha Heidebrecht of Hutchinson, Kansas on June 13, 1964. They had four children. He served in Vietnam before returning to the States. For the next 23 years, they lived in Kansas, North Dakota, Michigan, California, Washington, Alaska, Colorado, and California before moving to Fairmont, Nebraska in 1987. Vern was a member of the Fairmont Fire and Rescue Dept. for 14 years. Many people owe their lives to Vern's deep care and compassion for the people he served.
Vern was devoted to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling as often as possible to visit with them. He enjoyed road trips around the country to see friends, camping, fishing, shooting, riding his bicycle, and woodworking.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Edna Berggren of Fairmont, Nebraska, brother Charles Berggren of Fairmont, Nebraska, and his wife, Mary Berggren of Fairmont, Nebraska.
Hi is survived by brothers Milton (Delores), Norman (Betty); sons Tracy (Thelma), and Troy (Shamlynn); daughters Tami (Eric) Robinson, and Trisha (Jesse) Perez; 11 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
