Aaron Sheely was the son of Jacob and Mary (Hartman) Sheely. On Jan 7, 1862 he married the former Lucy Deardorff, daughter of John and Mary Deardorff.

He received a public school education and later attended Gettysburg College after which he engaged in teaching in the public schools of the county, a vocation which he followed for eight full terms.

In May 1863 he was elected as superintendent of the public schools of Adams County and remained in office until 1890, witnessing a steady growth and development in the public school system, both in the county and in the state.

He is the author of a volume entitled "Anecdotes and Humors of School Life" and contributed the historical sketch of Adams County in Egle's History of Pennsylvania, published in 1876. For a number of years, he contributed numerous articles on various subjects to prominent newspapers and magazines. The honorary degree of Master of Arts was conferred upon him by Gettysburg College in 1878.

He was an ardent lover of books and he had an extensive library of standard works. From his youth, through mature life to the years that he has been living retired, books were his constant companions.
