Thomas came to New York with his mother, Mary Jane Dodgson Sugden, and brother and sisters in May, 1849. His father, James Mather Sugden came the year before. He married Mary Jane Taylor, January 22, 1866, in New York, and they had twelve children. He was an artist and engraver of note during his lifetime, and some of his works are on display in the print department of the New York City Public Library on 5th Avenue. He served on the Union side in the Civil War.
