Anchorage resident J. PAUL VAUGHN, 58, died May 21, 2002, at his home. Services were at Cornerstone Community Church in Lathrop, Calif., with the Rev. Scott Hoag officiating. A graveside service followed at Parkview Cemetery in French Camp, Calif.
Mr. Vaughn was born June 9, 1943, in Roosevelt, Okla., to Paul and Velma Vaughn. He enlisted in the Army in 1960 and served overseas in Germany. He moved to Alaska in 1973. He worked as a commercial fisherman and was licensed as a U.S. Coast Guard captain for chartering. He was owner/operator of several boats working out of Kodiak. Mr. Vaughn retired in 1998 and was enrolled at the University of Alaska Anchorage with a major in education and planned to teach. Mr. Vaughn attended Seventh Day Adventist churches in Anchorage and family churches in Oregon and California. He volunteered services at Anchorage Junior Academy. Mr. Vaughn enjoyed following news and politics, being with children, gardening and animals. His family wrote: ''He was known by his family as Junior, or Jun. He was a devoted father, brother, son, uncle and husband. His smile would light up the room wherever he went. He had a wonderful sense of humor that cheered people. He was deeply spiritual and loved the Lord. He was dynamic, very intelligent and believed in living life to the fullest, regardless of health or hindrance. He was loved by many and his memory will be cherished.''
Mr. Vaughn is survived by his wife, Marjorie, and her family; five sisters, Joyce Schwerdtfeger of Oregon, Cleo Clendening of Tennessee, Norma Knott and Lee Wiserman of Washington and Shirley Crocchini of California; children, Steve, Stacy and Katherine Vaughn of California; seven grandchildren; and close friends, Lynn Pfarr-Ellison of Anchorage and Constantinous Giannopoulos and Earl Peterson of Kodiak. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Anchorage Junior Academy, 5511 O'Malley Road, Anchorage 99507. Arrangements were by Anchorage Funeral Home.
