Daniel was the son of Jonathan and Hannah (Sleeper) Smith of Loudon, New Hampshire. He moved to Corinna, Maine in 1838 where he was a blacksmith in the village center. He resided on Pleasant Street. After his wife, Elizabeth's death, he married Fannie (Ireland) Smith, widow of Lemuel Smith and daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Carl) Ireland. She is said to have been the first white baby girl born in Corinna.
