Daniel A. "Doc" Duggan was a well known and well loved citizen of Maryville, TN. After supporting his family by selling clothes from the back of his car during the depression, he became the founder of "Duggan's Men's Store", still in Maryville today, over sixty years later.
Doc was the father of four children: Don, Betty Jo, Margie and Kenneth. He loved gospel music and would attend sings at houses of worship of people of any color. Those coming into his store were guaranteed a friendly welcome by one of the town's characters, and a little help paying on time to get a suit if they needed it.
Doc was not a shy man. Once when we were among a couple of hundred people observing a gunfight at a western style tourist resort, my grandfather Doc broke through the barriers to tickle the nose of a supposedly dead fighter with a feather. Luckily people thought it was part of the show.
Doc served in the Navy as a young man and returned from service ny age 26 to marry the girl of his dreams, 17 yr old Mildred. She was steady partner in life who balanced Doc with her quiet practicality and religious foundation. She loved her children and grandchildren very much. She once told her granddaughter (me) "I know I married the right one."
