Obituary:

Darlyene Belle Eidem Mikkelson, 81, died on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at her home at the WEL Life Assisted Living Center in Elk Point, SD.

Darlyene was born on March 28, 1929, in Union County, S.D., to Sam and Vera (Richardson) Eidem. She attended country school as a youth and graduated from Vermillion High School in 1947. Darlyene graduated from the Southern State Teacher's College in 1948 with a teaching certificate. She taught at Sioux Point Country School, a one room school house, for three years.

She married LeRoy Mikkelson on August 28, 1948. They resided in Union County their entire lives, relocating once to the farm west of Elk Point. Her final home was at the WEL-Life Assisted Living Center in Elk Point, SD.

Darlyene was a blessing to many. She enjoyed serving others whether bringing coffee to LeRoy in the field and preparing lunch for the corn shellers, and the graceful management of a farm family to church involvement and helping in the community. Darlyene was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and a Vacation Bible School teacher and coordinator. As a WELCA member, Darlyene made quilts and soap for mission care packages, and ministered with her clown ministries. Darlyene served on the LEE, Life Enrichment for the Elderly, committee helping with a variety of programs geared toward serving the elderly, and brought Meals On Wheels to Elk Point in 1973, a program still running 30+ years strong in our community. Darlyene was awarded the ESA Diana Award for community service in 1978. In all that Darlyene said and did, she role modeled a Godly lifestyle.

Darlyene is survived by 5 adoring children, Tom Mikkelson of Elk Point, Leo Mikkelson (Sheela) of Jefferson, SD, Sally Balkevich of West Bend, WI, Ruth Bartek (Steve) of Elk Point and June Mikkelson of Remsen, IA; 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 1 aunt, 2 sisters in law and many wonderful cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Mikkelson, her parents, Sam and Vera (Richardson) Eidem, and her brothers, Robert Eidem and Larry Eidem.
