He was born on January 19,1944, in Harrisonburg, the son of the late Earl V. and Margaret Claytor Cash.
He was a member of the Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church and a graduate of Wilson Memorial High School Class of 1962.
He retired from Hopeman Bros with 36 years of service and retired from Lowes Store 646 in Staunton at the time of his death.
He was a country music D.J. for 17 years at Lynn's Lounge, known as "Cowboy Cash." He was also a member of the Waynesboro Elks Lodge 2270.
In addition to his loving and caring fiancé, Aida Holtz, he is survived by two daughters, Connie Lyn Cash, Donna Sue Cash Graber and her husband, Greg Graber of Grottoes, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, one sister, Judy DeWitt and her husband James of Fishersville, one brother, Danny Walker Cash and his wife Clarice of Waynesboro, a host of nieces, nephews, beloved friends and special friends Robbie Raynes, Chappie Chapman, who took him to the mountains during his battle with cancer.
Gary found humor in daily life and enjoyed the people he worked with always with a smile.
He loved to hunt deer and bear and spent many a day at his camp in Highland County. He appreciated the natural beauty of God's creation.
In his lifetime, softball and baseball were a big part of his life, and he enjoyed it so much. He played on the state champion team, Staunton, American Legion, (1960) Baseball Team.
He was state champion in softball 3 years with the old High Hatter Softball Team. He played with the Woodman of the World of Grottoes, Hopeman Bros, Bonanza, and High Hatter Softball Teams. He played and won 7 pennants with Harriston Baseball Team in the Rockingham County League. He also played with the Grottoes and the Shenandoah Baseball Team in the county league.
He will be greatly missed and be among many memories and story's. He loved to make people laugh. He always felt the song "Superfreak" by Rick James said it all and that it matched him. "I've Had It All, I've Done It All, Its All About ‘LOVE', "God is Love."
There will be a celebration of "Cowboy" Cash's life from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., on Sunday, March 20, 2011, of which family will receive friends at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 West Main Street.
A service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 2011 at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church , 148 Rock Mountain Lane, Crimora by the Revs. Neil McLaughlin, Gus Wright and Pastor Greg Mayo.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Robbie Raynes, Chappie Chapman, Lynn Wease, Rennie Dobbins, Bobby Shifflett, Steve Shirey, George Trogrott, Donnie Coffey, Fred Ramsey and Joe Leeth.
Honorary pallbearers will be anyone who has played with or against him in a game of ball.
"May the medical personnel who worked so hard to keep me alive be blessed and know that they are appreciated and respected for their efforts.
