Though the Honolulu Police Department was formally established in 1932, Officer John W. Mahelona is listed as the first Honolulu police officer to die in the line of duty.

While attempting to apprehend a burglar, the suspect pulled-out a handgun and fired at officer Mahelona, striking him in the neck and knocking him to the ground.

Despite having a lethal injury, Officer Mahelona pulled out his own weapon and returned fire at the burglar until he died from his injury shortly thereafter.

The burglar was captured and then was tried, convicted and sent to the gallows for the murder of a police officer.

Officer John W. Mahelona was survived by his wife, daughter and son, who were left without financial support since there was nothing established at the time to provide for the widows and orphans of Honolulu Police officers killed in the line of duty.
