Mary Ruth Dryden ("Ruth") was born in Washington, D.C. on March 31, 1925. She graduated from Goucher College in Towson, Maryland in 1947 with a degree in chemistry. After graduation she worked for the U.S. Government at the U.S. Mint and the National Bureau of Standards. She retired from the government in 1955.
Ruth was married on November 26, 1955 to Andrew Heuer Van Tuyl. She was the mother of four children - Andrew, Mary, Hugh and Jean – and grandmother of seven grandchildren. Ruth died on September 1, 2007 after a long illness.
