Robert Babington "Sonny" McCall Jr. died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Monday, March 7, 2011. He was 93. Sonny was born on June 15, 1917, to Robert Babington and Eola Blouin McCall. A lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, he graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1935, and in 1939, he earned a degree from LSU, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Sonny joined the U.S. Army in 1941 and was honorably discharged in 1946, having achieved the rank of major. He then worked at Louisiana Companies in the mortgage banking business for 37 years, followed by a career in real estate with Gully, Phelps & McKey/Coldwell Banker One from which he retired at age 91. Sonny served as president of the Louisiana Mortgage Bankers Association, YMCA of Baton Rouge, and City Club of Baton Rouge; and he served on the boards of the Baton Rouge Country Club and the Baton Rouge Assembly. He was a true Southern gentleman, a friend to many, an avid golfer, a fine dancer, and a generous and loving husband and father. Sonny is survived by his wife, Natalie McCall; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert B. McCall, III and Susan G. McCall, and James Robert McCall and Judy Q. McCall; son-in-law, Jack E. Hightower; and stepdaughter, Debbie Lamb. He is also survived by his grandchildren and their spouses, Kara Hightower Mathews and Derek Mathews, Kristi McCall Sciacchetano and Peter Sciacchetano, Melanie Blouin McCall, Robert Andrew McCall and Julie M. McCall; great-grandchildren, Ben Sciacchetano and Mary Grace Sciacchetano; nephew and godson, Gen. E. Ratcliffe "Andy" Anderson, M.D., and his wife, Sandy Anderson, and their children; and his dear friend, Frank G. Purvis Jr. and the Purvis family. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Ratcliffe and Eola Anderson; daughter, Julia McCall Hightower; and granddaughter, Chanin Reese McCall. Memorial service at First United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 10, at 1 p.m., with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Sonny's memory would be appreciated to First United Methodist Church, c/o The Future is Now, 930 North Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA 70802.
