Obituary from Port Townsend Leader 3-23-1978
Services were held Monday afternoon at Owyen Funeral Home for Irvan Earl Sampson, 81-year-old Port Townsend resident who died March 17 at Kah Tai Care Center. The Rev. Paul Hunsberger conducted the services, and interment was in Laurel Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dennis White, Donald Sampson, Arvid Waisanen, Robert Sampson, William Sampson, and Fred Johnson.
Mr. Sampson was born Sept. 15, 1896, in Hutchinson, Kansas, a son of Edgar and Emma Dennis Sampson. He was raised in Abilene and returned there following service with the Navy during World War I.
He married the former Mildred Young in Cando, N.D., on Sept. 30, 1923. They moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where he managed Woolworth's variety store until 1934. They later lived in Lead, Rapid City and Deadwood, S.D. and Cutbank and Shelby, Montana, while he was employed by Ben Franklin Variety Stores.
While here visiting his sister in 1943, he went to work for Crown Zellerbach, retiring in 1961.
Mr. Sampson was a member of Port Townsend Lodge No. 6, Free and Accepted Masons; Key City Chapter 71, Order of the Eastern Star; and American Legion Post 26.
He is survived by his wife Mildred; three sons, Robert E., Donald B., and William E; two daughters, Carol and Betty; two sisters Leona and Fern; a brother Carl; 27 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
