John is placed as child of Joseph and 1st wife based upon the obituary of Elmira Hodges listing his children as her grandchildren, but he was born 1845 when Elmira was 3, so clearly not her birth child. Therefore may have been listed as grandchildren because they were her husbands grand children, making John the child of Joseph and his 1st wife, yet to be identified. There is also the possibility that John was the son of Rev John Bilbo, Joesephs elder brother who died 1845, with Joseph taking him on after his brothers death? We see John Carnes and his family in Texas (1900 census), as are the other children of Rev John and Jane Stevenson. John Carnes is considered not the child of William Bilbo, the 3rd brother, supported by the fact he is not listed in succession of Thomas Bilbo 2 Sep 1874 as one of Williams heirs.
