Nettie's cremated remains were held at the Oregon State Hospital for nearly 50 years to be claimed by anyone related. After learning about her grand aunt, Helen Wilson applied for release of the ashes and records and she currently has the both.

Plans have been made to have Nettie's ashes buried with her parents in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Springfield Oregon. Service will be held at grave site and Helen plans to place an announcement in the local paper so anyone who is interested in attending may do so. The service will most likely be held during the first two weeks of this August (2014). Anyone interested is welcome to attend or for more information you may contact Helen through this memorial.

A book by David Maisel and a documentary by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information.

Nettie was born in 1886 in Oregon. Her father, Benjamin G. McPherson, was born in Missouri and traveled to Oregon with his grandfather in 1853. Her mother, Mary Simmons, was born in Iowa. Nettie had 10 siblings. Among them were Harlan, Rena, Preston, Lester, Minnie, Alva, Nora, Edith and James.

Nettie married George Blackburn on June 17, 1906 in Lane County, Oregon. It was her first marriage and his second. In the census of 1910 she was living in Goshen, Lane, Oregon with her husband. He was a 37 year old farmer born in North Carolina. They had no children. Her father died in 1912.

The Springfield News published 2/5/1917 reported Nettie had traveled to Sheridan, Oregon to undergo an unspecified operation.

During the censuses of 1920 & 1930 Nettie was a patient at the Oregon State Hospital, in Salem, Oregon. Her mother died in 1933.

George was living alone in 1920 in Goshen, Oregon and he remarried before 1930. He married Lillian Wilson. George died in 1936. Nettie's guardianship was re-established after his death. Nettie died at the state institution in 1965.
