Arthur Hanford Scott Leckband died Monday, March 14, 2011, on his 90th birthday at Salina Regional Hospital.
Art spent his last year at Salina Presbyterian Manor due to Alzheimer's disease. Art's parents, John Frederick and Pauline Lynn (Berendt) Leckband, came from Germany in their early teens and settled in Sioux City, Iowa. Art was born March 14, 1921, in Sioux City, the youngest of 10 siblings. He was the last survivor of the Leckband children.

Art graduated from Central High School in Sioux City. He attended Pasadena Junior College, Pasadena, Calif., before joining the United States Air Corps during World War II, serving between 1942 and 1946. After the war, he attended and graduated from Iowa University, Iowa City, Iowa, with a degree in accounting.

On June 1, 1946, Art was united in marriage to Kathleen "Kay" Knapp in Sioux City. They settled in Salina with their new family in 1948, where he worked for Kennedy & Coe Accountants. Art and Kay celebrated 64 years of marriage. In 1955, he opened his CPA office, known as Leckband & Woods. Later, the name was changed to A.H. Leckband & Company. Art practiced for 50 years in Salina, many of those with longtime partner Gene Harrison, CPA.

Art was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Masonic Lodge, Isis Shrine, Elks Country Club, Salina Country Club and Best Western Motel Association.

He served as past president in Salina Kiwanis Club, where he was a member for more than 50 years, served as director on the board of Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants and owned several Best Western Motels throughout the state of Kansas.

Art enjoyed golf, jokes, dancing, Cadillacs and traveling with the Best Western group and Shriners. He and Kay traveled many places worldwide including over six continents, which was a great source of pleasure for him.

Art's family was very important to him. In his 63 years of living in Salina, he raised his two daughters, Susan Guest (Dr. Ken) and Paula Johnson (Dr. Jim); saw his grandchildren grow up, Dr. Kathryn Gross (Dr. Guy), Scott Guest (Janie), Eric Johnson (Carissa) and Brian Johnson; and was present at the birth of his four great-grandchildren, Gunnar, Grayton and Kallia Gross and Jillian Guest.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. this evening, March 16, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, with the family receiving visitors from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 17, at St. John's Lutheran Church, followed by a graveside service at Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina.

Memorials may be made to the church or the Shrine Hospitals for Children, in care of the funeral home.
