Alfred was the son of Lucy Owens and John Wallace. He had a twin brother Albert.

Fred married Cynthia C. Collins on 23 Dec 1886 in Lyndon when he was 34 and she 40. The witnesses were the bride's relatives, Addison C. Collins and William H. Collins.

Cynthia and Alfred had one daughter, Millie, in October 1888. There is no record of her after the 1900 census.

It is believed that this memorial is a cenotaph. Alfred's death record said he was buried in Chelsea, MI. The informant on his death record was his half-sister, Lydia (Wallace) Wasson of Bellevue, MI.
