Lewis Ross (Cherokee) was born in the Cherokee Nation East (TN) to Daniel Ross b. 14 Jul 1760 in Sutherlandshire, Scotland, d. 22 May 1830 in St. Elmo, TN, a ferry owner/operator, who married in 1786 in Hamilton Co., TN, Mary "Mollie" McDonald b. 1 Nov 1770 in GA, d. 5 Oct 1808 in Ross' Landing, TN (now Chattanooga), daughter of John McDonald and Annie Shorey. He had the following siblings: Chief John Ross, Jennie who married Joseph Coody, Elizabeth, Susannah, Andrew, Annie, Margaret, and Maria Ross.

Lewis married on 15 Mar 1817 in Blount Co., TN, Frances S. "Fannie" Holt (buried at Ross); they had the following children: Minerva A., John McDonald, Araminta, Robert Daniel, Mary Jane, Amanda Melvina, and Sarah Elizabeth Ross.

Lewis was one of the wealthiest Cherokees who acquired his wealth through astute business acumen and from his land holdings throughout east TN. He was the Treasurer of the Cherokee Nation and paymaster for the removal of the Cherokee over the "Trail of Tears."
