"During the 1880'a after the Civil rights were returned to the White Southerner's and the yoke of the military occupation was lifted, a renewed spirit became evident in Charlton and Nassau Counties. With the widespread cutting and shipping of timber came prosperity to the area. Cuyler W. Hilliard with his son-in-law James S. Bailey acquired the timber rights on 12,000 acres of the virgin forestland in western Nassau County.A tram railroad was constructed from the area near St. Mary's River to the town of Hilliard in Nassau County where Mr. Hilliard had build a Sawmill."
