Walter Elmore Jones, 90, died Sunday morning at the Statesboro Nursing Home after an extended illness.

He moved to Statesboro in 1977 after having lived on Jekyll Island for 20 years. He was the last surviving member of a pioneer Tattnall County family; was a life-long businessman and sports enthusiast. He attended the University of Georgia and was graduated from the Georgia Business College in Douglas. He was a member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church and was active in founding the Brunswick Primitive Baptist Church where he served as deacon.

Survivors are his wife, Betty Hodges Jones, Statesboro; one son, W. Herbert Jones, Columbus; two daughters, Mrs. Sara Betty J. Cook, Statesboro, and Mrs. Evelyn J. Akins, Marietta; five grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mr. Jones will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder William H. Durrence and Elder T. Roe Scott officiating. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery.
