Leona Wright Sexton, 95, died of cancer August 1, 1996, at Ann's Private Care in St. George, Utah.

She was born November 22, 1901, in Charleston, Utah, to Owen Uriah and Eliza Matilda Casper Wright.

She married Marion Everett Sexton December 17, 1917, in Duchesne, Utah; the marriage was later solemnized in 1965 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

He preceded her in death in 1980.

Leona moved to St. George from Manila, Utah (Daggett County) in 1992 and took up residence in the Meadow Retirement Center until her illness in December, 1995.

She was a member of the LDS Church, active in Relief Society for many years.

She is survived by two children, Mrs. FD (Merle) Swanner and Bob M. (Florence Pierce) Sexton; two grandchildren, Julie Swanner Bailey, and Robert Wayne Sexton; six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her oldest son, Doyle Wayne Sexton (a survivor of the Bataan Death March who died of dysentery, malaria and malnutrition in a Japanese prisoner of war camp). She carried this memory for over 50 years.

The eldest of 11 children, she is survived by six sisters, Merle Killian, Salt Lake; Freda Zufelt, Heber City; Edna Stewart Ogden; and Mrs. Glen (Elma) Clark of Bountiful; two brothers, Wells Wright, Brigham City; and Earl Wright, Duchesne. She was preceded in death by sisters, Lila McGuire, Laura Nicol, and brothers, Clarence and Ernest Wright.

Leona was a good mother and grandmother and looked on with adoration of her family. A kind, good hearted lady and the most unselfish person that one could ever hope to meet. While living in Manila, Utah in her late years, her neighbors all treated her like family, taking her to church, shopping, the post office and taking her to the Senior Citizen Center where she was a board member for many years.

She was a special person to those who knew her. She was our Mom and Grandma and we love her.

Graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 6, 11 a.m., at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 106th South 17th East, SLC.

A one hour viewing will be held at the chapel prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society.
