Jasper was the husband of Christina Jane (Brown) Reed Mewhirter (1853-1908). They were married on November 27, 1867 in Union County, Iowa. Jasper was the father of at least seven children with Christina including: Perry, Edward, Frank, Charles, George, Bertha and James Reed. He was the son of Quinton Reed and Susannah (West)Reed. Jasper was a Civil War veteran of the Union Army. He enlisted on June 6, 1862 in Sedalia, Missouri and was mustered out on May 27, 1865. Jasper served in Co. G, 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry and also in Co. B and Co. K, 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. His widow applied for his pension first in 1897 in Oregon and again in 1902 after her marriage to Francis Mewhirter.
