Bernie was born August 27, 1924 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and grew up in Neenah, Wisconsin. As a Veteran, Bernie served his country in the United States Navy during World War II where he was a gunner aboard an L.S.T. at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 and he served during the Korean Conflict from 1947 to 1952. Bernie retired as a painter from Civil Service at Great Lakes, Illinois. He was a member of Zion-Benton American Legion Post 865 where he served as Post Commander from 1974 to 1976 and the Zion-Benton Jay Cee's.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Walter; and his parents, Walter and Marie Ackerman.
