Bingham Lake farmer Ole Elvin Smith, 58, died of lung cancer Feb. 27.
Rev. Milan Davig and Rev. Laurie Skow-Anderson officiated at the funeral conducted March 2 at American Lutheran Church. Vocalist was Jan Yonker and organist was Carol Vought.
Pallbearers were Larry Nelson, Wilbur Hartberg, Arvil Peterson Jr., Larry Crosse, Ed Yonker and Lloyd Stucke.
Interment was in the Windom Memory Gardens.
Ole Elvin Smith, son of Willard Ray and Louise Tea Ulvestad Smith, was born March 3, 1930, in St. James. His family lived in Madelia for the first few years of his life until moving to a farm east of Bingham Lake in 1937. Ole graduated from Bingham Lake High School in 1948.
On Dec. 10, 1950, Ole married Peggy Jane O'Neill at American Lutheran Church in Windom. From that time, they lived south of Bingham Lake and continued to farm.
In 1958, Ole was named Outstanding Young Farmer by the area Jaycees. An active member of American Lutheran Church, he served as an usher and member of the board of trustees. He was a member of the Windom Co-p Elevator board, county extension board and served on the board of directors of First National Bank.
In April 1988, Ole was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. He was able to continue working through the fall harvest.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Jane.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Jane, Bingham Lake; five children, Danny of Bingham Lake, David of Windom, Wesley of Mankato, Mrs. Roger (Twyla) Larson of Albert Lea and James of Windom; 10 grandchildren. (Cottonwood County Citizen, Windom, Minnesota, March 8, 1989, Page 7, Column 4)
