Mary was born to Peter and Mary (McGuire) Lass. Mary's mother died when Mary was only twelve days old; and for a time, Mary was raised by Joe and Katie McGuire. She attended Sunnyside School and later graduated as valedictorian from Notre Dame in Mitchell, SD. Mary taught at a number of country schools. On June 20, 1923, Mary married Francis "Frank" W. Farley; and, the couple lived together on the farm southwest of Beresford, SD. Mary remained there after Frank died.
In 1970, Mary graduated from the University of South Dakota. She moved to Beresford in 1972. She remained there until moving to a nursing home in 1990. In 1991, Mary moved into an apartment at Evergreen Squares, where she remained until a few weeks before her death. She was survived by four of her eight children, two sisters, thirty-four grandchildren, sixty great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
