Woodrow "Woody" Wilson Swecker III, 45, a resident of Clayton, N.C., departed this life and went to be with his heavenly father on June 22, 2008, after fighting a courageous 19-month battle with brain cancer.

He was born on Feb. 1, 1963, at Elkins, the son of Woodrow Swecker and wife, Patricia, of Dailey and mother, Carole McDonald and Thomas of Junior.

Also surviving are one son, Woodrow Ethan Swecker and his wife of Clayton, N.C.; four sisters, Susan Swecker of Junior, Lisa Tusing and husband, Johnny, of Junior, Heather Judy and husband, Scott of Elkins and Michelle Kerns and husband, Tim, of Belington; three brothers, Bruce Caprio, Joey Caprio and Chris Caprio; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, who he loved dearly.

He was a 1981 graduate of Tygarts Valley High School and attended Parkersburg Community College where he received a degree in welding. After college, he enlisted in the Navy and served his country for eight years. After serving in the Navy, he moved to Clayton, N.C. where up to his illness, he was a lieutenant detention officer for the Wake County Sheriff Department. Woody was an avid West Virginia Mountaineer fan, loved to listen to music, talking on the phone and spending time with family and friends and his son, Ethan. Woody enjoyed each day to the fullest. He had the ability to make friends after only talking to them for just a few minutes. He loved playing jokes on people and always had a smile on his face. Woody never lost his battle with cancer instead God took him to his heavenly home. Woody will be greatly missed by family and friends and never be forgotten.

Services were June 25 at Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Roy officiating. An eulogy was given by Capt. Theodore Brown of the Wake County Sheriff Department. Entombment followed in Pine Crest Memorial Park Mausoleum. Mclaurin Funeral Home of Clayton, N.C., was in charge of the arrangements.
