Amos was the son of Amos Avery Sr. (1774-1840) and Dorothy Crary (1779-1852).

On December 6, 1827 he married Elizabeth Treat, who was the daughter of James Treat and Mary Stanton, and was known as Betsy.

Amos and Betsy had four daughters; Frances Elizabeth Avery Arnold (1829-1876), Unnamed Daughter (Sept 18 (19), 1833-Sept 26, 1833), Jane Treat Avery Arnold (1834-1914), and Mary Louisa Arnold (1837-1874). Their family bible is currently held by the Albany Institute of History and Art.

Their eldest daughter Fanny was born in Preston, Ct. and shortly after they moved to Stockbridge, Mass. where Amos opened The Centralville Cotton and Woolen Manufacturing Company with his brother-in-law David Lester. What happened to this business is unknown, but by 1840 the Averys were living in Albany, NY where Amos would run a fruit and produce business called Avery and Company.

Amos died at just 50 years of age.
