RALEIGH Thad Eure , 93, of the 3700 block of Old Lassiter Mill Road, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 1993.
He served as secretary of state of North Carolina from 1936 to 1988, holding the longest record of public service in elective office in the nation. Born Nov. 15, 1899, in Gates County, he was the son of the late Tazewell Augustus Eure and Armecia Langstun Eure . Surviving are his wife, Minta Banks Eure ; one daughter, Armecia Eure Black of Durham; one brother, Dr. Darden J. Eure of Morehead City; one sister, Mrs. Donald S. Coeyman of Greensboro; four grandsons, James Norman Black III and Robert Perry Black of Durham, Frederick Eure Black of Richmond, Va., Thad Johnston Eure of Raleigh; three granddaughters, Armecia Lee Black of Durham, Van Ellen Eure of Raleigh and Shelley Eure Belk of Huntersville; and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Eure was preceded in death by one son, Thad Eure Jr., who died Nov. 18, 1988.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Road. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's St., is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The State Capital Foundation, 109 E. Jones St., Raleigh, N.C. 27601, or to The Thad Eure Scholarships, Elon College, Elon College, N.C. 27244.
