Hiram was the son of Isaac and Rosanna Lantz Ward of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. He was a retired farmer. Hiram married Ardella Black on 18 February 1875 in Seneca County, Ohio,and they had Jesse, Earl Franklin, Irvin, Dottie, and Floyd. Following her death in 1888, he married Lovina Williams in Wyandot County on 12 September 1894. Hiram died from a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 73 years 4 months and 2 days.
