William was the son of William Francis Steele and Susanna McKee. On 28 Jul 1912, William married Amelia Sophia Beisner. William and Amelia had the following children: Devona Mathilda, Orville August, Marie K., Earl Beisner, Ralph William, Alvera M. Alta Mae, and Harvey Gene.

In 1916, William and his family moved to Gresham, Nebraska, where they lived for 14 years. Many of William and Amelia's children were born in Gresham. In 1930, William returned to Swanwick, Illinois, and later moved to Willisville.

William died suddenly in his home at age 54 years. He was described as a kind and loving father and husband and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Preceding William in death were his father, mother, one sister, one brother and a grandson.

The obituary lists the following survivors: his wife, Amelia; four daughters, Devona (Ernest) Volpert of Coulterville, Marie K (John) Cunningham of Swanwick, and Alvera and Alta Mae at home; four sons, Orville, Earl, and Ralph of Swanwick, and Harvey Gene at home. In addition, the obit lists one grandaughter, Rojean Cunningham; his foster mother Mrs. Henry Meyerhoff of Percy; two bothers, Joe Steele of Steeleville, and Roy Steele of Summers, Washington.

Funeral services were held 9 April at the funeral parlor in Coulterville, with interment in the Swanwick Cemetery.
