Walter was the son of Robert Davidson and Margaret Murdock and one of nine children: Robert, William, Jeanette, James, Walter, Anna, Andrew, Thomas, and Margaret. He immigrated in 1832 and lived in Perrysburg, Ohio. His father, Robert, was county commissioner. Walter married Jane Stewart on 11 December 1841 in Wood County. They had children: Robert, Maggie, Mary, James, Sarah, Andrew, Thomas, and Mattie.
