Thelma J. Sanford, 93, of Wausau, died Mar 9, 2011.
Thelma was born Nov 12, 1917, in Eleva, WI, to Gilbert and Heleborg (Halverson) Moen. She graduated from Eleva High School and also from the Wisconsin Business College of La Crosse. On Jan 17, 1940, she married Robert Sanford of La Crosse. In the early 1950s, they moved to Wausau, and here they raised their six children.
Thelma was employed by the Wausau School System from 1963 to 1975. She was a faithful longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, a Sunday school teacher, an active member of the ILCW, and also served as an American Red Cross volunteer at Colonial Manor Medical and Rehabilitation Center for 24 years.
Her greatest interests outside the home were volunteering and befriending people in need. She loved to read and had a wonderful curiosity about the world. She cherished her Norwegian heritage and told wonderful stories about her relatives, the Moens and Halversons.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; two brothers, Gilford Moen, Eleva, and John Moen, Eau Claire; her sister, Evelyn Evans, Whitehall; and three great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her six children, two sons, Michael (Toni), Wausau, and Robert (Lynn), Sedona, AZ; four daughters, Kristi (Ken) Goetsch, Whitefish, MT, Karen (David) Beenken, Minnetonka, MN, Mary Sanford (Adrian Bourque), Wausau, and Elizabeth (Todd) Gabriel, Rochester, MN; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Jean (Don) Parkhurst, Eau Claire; and nieces and nephews.
