OBITUARY:
"The end of an era has come for the CNR with the death of John McAdam "Jack" Finley, retired Chief Travelling Auditor, who passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 29th, 2010 at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, in his 100th year. Beloved husband of Ruth Stewart Myles, who predeceased him in 2000. Jack was born in Montreal on June 9th, 1911, second son of Wesley Burdett Finley and Agnes Ethel McAdam. He began his career with the CNR on June 15th, 1925, shortly after his 14th birthday, when one of the executives, Mr. Harrison, took a liking to him while Jack was caddying for him on the Montreal golf course. And so, his career began. In 1942, he married the love of his life, Ruth Myles, in Montreal, Quebec. This was during World War II and there was talk of conscription going around, so he volunteered for the Air Force, and was stationed in what was then the British colony of Newfoundland, responsible for handling the pay of all the airmen flying out and returning from overseas. On his return to the CNR, he continued his climb through the Auditor system, becoming the Chief Travelling Auditor for Eastern Canada, with his office at CN headquarters in Montreal. When the Chief Travelling Auditor for Western Canada retired, the CN executives decided to combine the two positions together and have one Chief Travelling Auditor for the country - Jack. On June 15th, 1975, Jack retired "early" at the age of 64, after 50 years of service.
Besides his wife, he is predeceased by his brothers, Earle and Doug, and sister Mildred (Lawrence) Ripley. Left to mourn are his nieces Lorraine (Derk) Sherren, Kingston, ON; Judy Myles, Toronto, ON; nephew Grant Myles, Mississauga, ON; cousins Lois Hope, Ottawa, ON; Jean Klassen, Ottawa, ON; sister-in-law Jean (John) Steedman, Billings, MT USA; dear friend and caregiver, Pat Finlay, Lynden, ON; and many other extended family. At his request, there will be no funeral. Interment on Friday, Nov. 12th at 1 pm alongside his wife, in Pinecrest Cemetery, Ottawa."
