Jack D. Anderson enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 3, 1943, the same day as his brother Bill. Both went into field artillery, but Bill later joined the 2nd Ranger Battalion.
On December 2, 1944 Jack transfered into Bill's combat unit, already in the German area of the Huertegen Forest.

On December 6, 1944, the Rangers moved in to help finish the occupation and holding of the village of Bergstein. The next day the Rangers' task was to assault and hold the 400-meter high Castle Hill (Hill 400) just east of Bergstein. Company D and Company F began the assualt at 7:30 AM of the heavily fortified hill, laden with pill boxes and bunkers. It was a bloody battle with heavy artillery barrages and repeated German counter attacks. The Rangers succeeded in capturing Hill 400, but with severe casualties including Jack and his brother Bill, both dying from shrapnel wounds.
