Aged Retired Farmer Dies. Grafton Sentinel. Grafton, WV. Aug. 30, 1940
Excerpt -- Stricken with a sudden heart attack, John R. Messenger, 83 years old, died yesterday afternoon at the home of his grandson, James Bell, on Robinson's Run. His general health had been good up to the time of the fatal seizure. A native of Preston County, Mr. Messenger was born on August 6, 1855, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Messenger. Survivors include five children, J. O. Messenger, Grafton; Mrs. Cleo Summers, Fairmont; Mrs. Mary Wilkinson, who lives in Canada; Russell R. Messenger, Kingwood, and Mrs. Blanche Pyles of Newburg. Mr. Messenger was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Christian church. Funeral services were held at the Bartlett Funeral Home at 2 o'clock this afternoon with the Rev. Oakey Wilson Grow, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Bluemont Cemetery.
