"Thomas Barnes was born April 24, 1840 at Drewsey, Kentucky. He came with his brother to California in the early days of mining and settled in Nelson Station, Butte County, where he lived for a number of years.
"He met Mary Headrick and they were united in marriage March 9, 1864. They bought a large tract of land and engaged in farming in Butte County for a number of years.
There were eleven children born to this union, six sons and five daughters. Two of the children died at an early age. Joseph, a very fine young man, lived to be nineteen years of age and Isaac about two years of age. Both are buried in a small cemetery at the outskirts of Nelson Station, in a field to be seen easily from the town ..."
Square grey granite marker; 12x12 wide, and approximately 3 feet tall; on granite support base, on a larger granite base.
Obelisk is marked w/Joseph's name, facing west; shared with Isaac J.
Footstone, broken lying further west: "J.L.B."
