OBIT March 9, 2011
METROPOLIS, Ill. — Verna Mae Helm of Metropolis passed away at the age of 110, March 7, 2011, in the home in which she was born August 17, 1900, the daughter of Senator Douglas Wymore Helm and Mary Ann Howell Helm.

At the age of eight, she took part in the dedication of Fort Massac State Park. A graduate of the University of Illinois, she also earned a Master's degree from Columbia Teachers College in New York. She was for many years a teacher of home economics, primarily in Centralia, Illinois.

She helped organize the Business and Professional Women's Club in Metropolis. In retirement, she was very active in the First Methodist Church of Metropolis, a committed member and officer of the DAR, and a lifelong Cubs fan.

Never married, Aunt Verna has been a cherished second mother to the members of her family. She traveled much of the world with her brother Lloyd. She was a loving, non-judgmental woman, a true Christian. She long served as command central to her extended family, the one to call about births, deaths or impending marriages, survival of tornadoes or other events.

She was preceded in death by three little siblings who died of diphtheria, Claudius, Clarice and Mary; both her parents; her brothers Roy, Lloyd and Herbert Helm; as well as her nephews, Robert R. and Douglas W. Helm; and her niece, Mary Helm Mattson.

She is survived by her nephew, Milton M. Helm of Metropolis; two nieces, Marilyn Helm Hadley of Reno, Nevada, and Jane Helm Maddock of Dillon, Montana; as well as numerous grand and great-grandnieces and nephews.

A graveside service with Pastor David Deem and her great-nephew, James Mattson, officiating will take place at the Masonic cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2011, or in case of inclement weather at Miller Funeral Home. A memorial celebration of her life is planned for later this year at a date yet undetermined.

There will not be any visitation. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Online condolences may be left at millerfh1912.com.

The obituary says she is buried in Masonic Cemetery but she is buried in the IOOF Chosen Friends in her family plot #5, that is beside the Masonic.
