James was a son of James Appoline and Elizabeth (Paisley) Holder. He was the brother of: William "Billie" A., Cynthia, Hezekiah, Sarah, Lucinda Caroline, Isaac Alexander and Temperance Lindsey. Calvin and his wife Elizabeth came from Lenoir, North Carolina, to Sgt. Bluff with there six children in November, 1881. Calvin was a Confederate soldier, wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg. He received a medical discharge from Company I, 26th Regiment, North Carolina Troops, on November 17, 1864. The family stayed at Welch Hotel upon arrival in Sgt. Bluff. Later, they lived on various farms in the Weedland area. The family liked the area so much they had no desire to return to North Carolina. James married Barbara Elizabeth Friddle on Augut 8, 1865 in Patterson, Caldwell County, North Carolina. They had the following children: Sophronia Evaline, John Finley, James Calvin, Edward Carter, Martha Caroline, Mary Ellen, Franklin "Frank" Hezekiah and Estella Anne.
