John Roy was called Captain, or Capt. as he was a section foreman on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. His duty was to maintain and inspect the rail conditions in his section. John Roy' section was from Oolagah to Inola. He had a 2-man railcar and he'd put it on the track and would ride it up and down the rails checking the rails & track bed. He stored the railcar in the Mo. Pacific wooden shed, which sat next to the rails.

He was the son of William Riley Kennedy, MD of Mason, West VA and Elizabeth Hesson of Allegheny, PA. His mother was a Pennsylvania Dutch, unfortunately she died when John Roy was only 3 years old. His father remarried and he was raised by his step mother: Julia Ann Rice. His father as the town doctor made house calls to many of the family in those parts. He was one of the main doctors in Marble City, Oklahoma.
