Donald W Batemen,80, formerly of Marion, died Friday March 21, 1997 in Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, following a long illness.
Services: 2 pm Monday, Murdoch Funeral Home, Marion by the Rev Jim Warren. Burial: Cedar Memorial Cemetery, with military rites.
Survivors include a son, Harry Caraway of Apex, NC; a brother, Frederick Bateman of Marion; and a sister, Wilma Van Natta of Marion. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Adella; 5 sisters, Margaret Batemen, Gertrude Smith, Laura Peck, Pearl Potter and Eva Williams; and 2 brothers, Henry Bateman and an infant.
Born the son of George and Mary Zerbe Bateman March 25, 1916 in Central City,
he married Adella Williams Caraway Aug 14, 1948 in Vinton. She died May 15 , 1991.
He served in the US Army during WW II in the European Theatre as a tank commander, and was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
Don owned and operated Bateman Electric for over 33 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a 59 year member of Marion Trojan Lodge 548, AF&AM, and American Legion Marion Post 298; a member of the Cedar Rapids Consistory, Gethsemane White Shrine of Cedar Rapids, Marion Chapter 183, OES, Ambar Grotto of Cedar Rapids, and Marion Christian Church. Military rites by American Legion Marion Post 298.
