Asmus Frees was born January 9, 1864 to Henry (Heinrich) and Marie Rasmus Frees in Grohs Rheide Slesvig-Holstein, Germany and died November 3, 1960, at the age of 96 years in Harlan, Iowa.

Asmus was named after his grandfather, Asmus Hermann Frees (1802-1859), and his great grandfather, Asmus Herrmann Freese, who died in 1818. Asmus' mother Marie Rasmus Frees died at the age of 30 (22 November 1843 - 6 February 1874). Asmus was 10 years old when she died. Asmus' father, Heinrich, and mother, Marie, had the following 5 children before Marie died:

Asmus and Christina and their 3 daughters, arrived at Ellis Island 13 July 1894 from Hamburg. Asmus' half brother Christof age 16 was on the same ship. They took the train from New York to Avoca, Iowa where Asmus and Christof had relatives living. (Margaretha Catharina Frees and husband Simon Beine, were living in Avoca - Margaretha was a sister of Asmus and Christof's father, Heinrich Frees.)

Asmus and Christina settled in Avoca where they farmed until 1897. They then farmed in Polk Township, Shelby County until they moved to Irwin in 1915. In 1943 they moved to Harlan.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan.
