Huldah Ellis Merrill, born at Riga, Genessee Co. N Y, May 31, 1822. When she was 13 her father, Daniel Merrill removed with his family to Michigan. She in common with the early pioneers of the state endured much hardship and privation, heightened by the early and untimely death of both parents.
Married to John Lakin Nov. 6, 1848 whose death she has survived but two years. They settled in the neighborhood where they afterwards lived and died. Her life was one of great physical suffering but through it all has shown much of Christian patience and fortitude. She early expressed a hope in Christ as a personal Savior, this faith she often spoke of as a sure support and enabled her as lifes hours were drawing to a close to say "He knows best, if he calls me, I am content to go."
