Clyde LeRoy Sutton, 78, died July 2, 2001, at the Oregon Veterans Home at The Dalles.

His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home at Vernonia. His sons-in-law, Jerry Bruce and Jerry Hayes will officiate. Private interment will be at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a reception after the service at Lews Place in Vernonia.

Mr. Sutton was born on Aug. 23, 1922, at Thornton, Idaho, to LeRoy and Eunice H. Clark Sutton. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Burns. He was a 1940 Burns High School graduate.

He was a veteran of World War II, having joined the U.S. Navy on Nov. 12, 1942. He served for four years and was discharged on Jan. 18, 1946, at Bremerton, Wash.

Mr. Sutton was married to Lurley A. Sass on June 30, 1946, at Richland. After their marriage they lived at Vernonia. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary just two days before his death.

From 1946 to 1958, Mr. Sutton worked at the Oregon-American Mill at Vernonia. He later worked for Kaiser in St. Helens until 1961 when he went to work for Tecktronix at Beaverton. He worked in the warehouse as a forklift operator for 22 years, retiring in 1983.

Among his special interests were gardening, crossword puzzles, stamp collecting and birds. He also was interested in researching the history of covered bridges throughout Oregon. He had compiled an extensive scrapbook with photos and facts about the bridges. He also had a special love for spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Larry Sutton; and a sister, Leah Mills.

Survivors include his wife, Lurley Sutton of La Grande; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Jerry Bruce of Gresham and Sherry and Jerry Hays of La Grande; two sisters, Adaline Walker of Hillsboro and Madge Heman of Portland; two grandchildren and their spouses, Sandy and Steve Meshke of Warrenton and Jason and Rheadean Hays of La Grande; and four great-grandchildren, Emily Meshke and Ryan Meshke, both of Warrenton, and Breanne Hays and Noelle Hays, both of La Grande; and several nieces and nephews.
